Use of Google Classroom

Use of Google Classroom

The CMS I have chosen to use is Google Classroom. This CMS is beneficial to my teaching as it allows me to provide students additional opportunities to show what they know, and express their thoughts in an alternative way to the practical setting of Physical Education. It is important to consider that not all students are as confident, outgoing or "sporty" as some of their peers. To assume they do not understand concepts covered in class because they are not practically observable would be wrong.

I have set up an assignment within the activity Understanding Invasion Games, that allows students to submit answers to questions via video, audio or as a written document. These questions relate directly to the standards assessed within this unit of work. Some students find it difficult to portray their knowledge through written tasks, and within ASH we have a high percentage of ESL students. I hope that by offering students a number of ways to show their knowledge and understanding, I am more likely to see them succeed. Google Classroom links directly with Google Drive, making it easy for students to use.

This CMS in particular allows me to set up assignments like this very easily. Google Classroom is easy to access via laptop or iPad, and students can update their work throughout the course. I believe setting up an assignment like this enhances student learning as it compliment the practical work covered in lessons. I am able to monitor progress and comment where necessary in order to offer feedback to the student. Google Classroom supports communication and I believe additional tasks such as this assignment encourages students to reflect on the work done in Physical Education. This type of assessment, (or reflection) means students are more aware of the lesson objectives and the purpose, with direct relation to the rubrics that are used within unit assessments.

Please see below my screencast where I explain the purpose of the assessment, the curriculum standards with which the assessment aligns and why I chose Google Classroom to create this assessment.

Hi Jennifer,

I really like your use of Google Classrooms to engage students in discussion and written tasks that might not otherwise be feasible in an active PE course. This was a smart CMS choice since you can utilize video and Google Forms all within the system itself.

According to Hattie and Timperley (2007), written comments from the instructor help students learn better than a numerical score alone. Were you planning on using the capabilities of GoogleDocs to provide written feedback to students or an audio annotation tool? I think either of these could help with your goal of connecting with students who might not be able to physically demonstrate their skills, as you noted.

Hattie and Timperley (2007) also emphasize self-regulation. Is there a way students could even self-assess using the standards-based rubric you have on the site? This might be a lot given it's a fairly brief assignment…just something to think about.

Great assessment and utilization of the affordances of your CMS.
